Constantine Doukas (usurper)

Constantine Doukas was a Byzantine general who briefly usurped the throne from Emperor Michael VII Doukas in 1078. He should not be confused with the earlier Emperor Constantine X Doukas.

Constantine Doukas, a member of the powerful Doukas family, served as a general under Michael VII. Dissatisfaction with Michael VII's ineffective rule and the empire's declining fortunes provided an opportunity for ambitious figures to challenge his authority. In 1078, Constantine Doukas, stationed in the Balkans, revolted and declared himself emperor. He garnered support, particularly in the regions he controlled.

However, Constantine Doukas' rebellion faced competition. Another general, Nikephoros Botaneiates, also launched a revolt and enjoyed even greater support, including the backing of influential figures in Constantinople. Botaneiates' forces eventually captured the imperial capital, and Michael VII abdicated.

Constantine Doukas's aspirations to the throne were thwarted by the swift success of Nikephoros Botaneiates. Following Botaneiates's accession as Emperor Nikephoros III, Constantine Doukas’ fate is not entirely clear, though his usurpation attempt effectively ended with Botaneiates's victory. His brief rebellion contributed to the period of instability and civil war that plagued the Byzantine Empire in the late 11th century.
