Soviet destroyer Gnevny (1958)
The Gnevny (Гневный, meaning "Wrathful" or "Angry") was a Kotlin-class (Project 56) destroyer of the Soviet Navy. Launched in 1958, she served in the Soviet Pacific Fleet. Kotlin-class destroyers were a significant advancement over previous Soviet destroyer designs, representing an attempt to combine heavy gun armament with a reasonable anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability.
Gnevny was equipped with two quadruple 45mm anti-aircraft guns, and two twin 130mm main guns in turrets. She also possessed torpedo tubes and depth charge launchers for ASW. These destroyers were important surface combatants during the Cold War era, often deployed to monitor foreign naval activity and project Soviet naval power.
The ship likely participated in various naval exercises and patrols throughout her service life. Information on the specific activities of Gnevny is limited to available historical records, but she would have been a part of the Soviet Navy's standard operational deployments. Like many Soviet vessels of the period, her service life ended with decommissioning, and she was likely scrapped after becoming obsolete. The Project 56 destroyers, including Gnevny, were superseded by more advanced missile-equipped destroyers and frigates in the later decades of the Cold War.
