Sling (drink)

A Sling is a family of mixed alcoholic drinks traditionally composed of a spirit (typically gin, brandy, or whiskey), sugar, water, and bitters. Many variations exist, and fruit juices or liqueurs are often added. The exact origins of the sling are debated, but it is believed to have originated in the United States in the late 18th or early 19th century as a simple, medicinal-like beverage.

Over time, the sling evolved from a basic concoction to more elaborate cocktails. The Singapore Sling, a complex gin-based cocktail featuring cherry brandy, Bénédictine, and various fruit juices, is arguably the most famous example of the Sling family.

While the basic Sling recipe remains a recognizable template, modern interpretations often diverge significantly, emphasizing fresh ingredients, diverse spirits, and innovative flavor combinations. The term "Sling" is therefore more broadly applied to a style of drink rather than a specific recipe.
