Troesmis

Troesmis was an ancient Roman fortress and city located in what is now Romania, on the right (south) bank of the Danube River. It was situated near modern Turcoaia, in Tulcea County.

Troesmis played a significant role in the Roman defense system of the Lower Danube frontier (Limes Moesiae). Originally a Dacian settlement, it was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD). The Romans established a military camp (castrum) there, housing various units of the Roman army, including legions and auxiliary troops.

The city developed around the military camp and became an important civilian center. It served as a strategic point for controlling the river traffic and protecting the Roman province of Moesia Inferior (later Scythia Minor) from incursions by tribes from the north.

Troesmis flourished from the 2nd to the 6th centuries AD. During this period, it was granted the status of municipium and later colonia, signifying its importance within the Roman administration. The city had a diverse population, including Roman veterans, merchants, and local Thracians.

Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed the remains of the Roman fortress, baths, temples, residential buildings, and workshops. These findings provide valuable insights into the urban planning, architecture, and daily life of a Roman frontier city.

Troesmis declined in importance during the late Roman period and was eventually abandoned in the 7th century AD, likely due to barbarian invasions and the weakening of the Roman Empire. The site is now an archaeological site and an important historical landmark in Romania.
