USS Prairie (AD-5)
The USS Prairie (AD-5) was a destroyer tender that served in the United States Navy from 1896 to 1922. Originally built as a merchant vessel named El Sol, she was purchased by the Navy and converted into a repair ship.
Prairie served extensively during the Spanish-American War, providing support and repairs to the fleet. She continued in this role in the years following, deploying to various locations around the world, including the Caribbean and the Pacific.
During World War I, Prairie served as a receiving ship and training vessel. After the war, she continued in a limited capacity until being decommissioned and sold in 1922. Throughout her career, USS Prairie provided vital logistical support to the US Navy, contributing to the operational readiness of the fleet. She was a workhorse of the Navy, quietly supporting the more glamorous warships.
