Discovery (Mike Oldfield album)
Discovery is the tenth studio album by English multi-instrumentalist musician Mike Oldfield, released in June 1984 on Virgin Records. It marks a departure from his primarily instrumental, long-form compositions, featuring shorter songs with vocals, primarily performed by Scottish singer Maggie Reilly. It is Oldfield's first album to be recorded outside of the UK, at Tinejdad Hotel in Ibiza, Spain.
The album's themes revolve around travel, technology, and personal exploration. Key tracks include "To France," a commercially successful single featuring Reilly's vocals, and "Talk About Your Life," which explores communication and understanding. Other notable songs are "Discovery," the title track, and the instrumental pieces "The Lake" and "Afghan."
Discovery was a commercial success, reaching number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and performing well in several European countries. It was generally well-received by critics, who praised the album's strong melodies and Reilly's vocal performances, although some noted the shift away from Oldfield's earlier progressive rock style.
The album has been reissued several times, including remastered editions with bonus tracks. The album artwork features a landscape photograph with the album title superimposed in a futuristic font.
