CEVA rail

CEVA rail, often shortened to just CEVA, refers to a major public transportation project in Geneva, Switzerland, and the surrounding French region of Haute-Savoie. The acronym CEVA stands for "Cornavin - Eaux-Vives - Annemasse", representing the key railway stations connected by the new infrastructure. The CEVA project involved constructing a new railway line connecting the Geneva Cornavin railway station with the Annemasse railway station, predominantly underground, thereby creating a regional express rail network.

The primary objective of the CEVA rail project was to improve regional connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the Geneva metropolitan area. By providing a direct rail link between Geneva and Annemasse, the project sought to encourage commuters to utilize public transport rather than private vehicles. The railway line connects to existing rail networks, allowing for travel to destinations beyond Annemasse and Geneva.

The CEVA rail line provides a significant increase in the frequency and capacity of rail services in the region. It facilitates cross-border travel between Switzerland and France, making it easier for people to live in France and work in Geneva, or vice-versa. Several new or renovated stations were included in the CEVA project, designed to integrate with the surrounding urban environment and provide improved access to public transportation.

Construction of the CEVA rail line faced numerous technical challenges, including tunneling through dense urban areas and coordinating with existing infrastructure. The project involved extensive environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures. The CEVA rail network has been integrated into the Léman Express regional rail network, which serves a wider geographical area around Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). The Léman Express provides connections to destinations throughout the region.
