Skyline Trail (Cape Breton Highlands National Park)
The Skyline Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada. Renowned for its dramatic coastal views and accessibility, the trail offers panoramic vistas of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Cabot Trail.
The Skyline Trail is an out-and-back trail, primarily consisting of a well-maintained boardwalk and gravel path. It is considered relatively easy, making it suitable for hikers of varying experience levels, including families with children. The total length of the trail is approximately 6.5 to 9 kilometers depending on whether the optional headland path is taken. The headland path adds to the overall hike but provides particularly stunning views.
The trail is particularly known for its potential to spot wildlife, especially moose, which are frequently seen in the surrounding area, particularly during dawn and dusk. Black bears and bald eagles are also possibilities.
The trail's name reflects its location along the top of a plateau, providing an unobstructed "skyline" perspective. The boardwalk section of the trail was constructed to protect the fragile alpine tundra ecosystem that thrives in this environment.
Parking is available at the trailhead, and Parks Canada charges an entrance fee to the National Park. Visitors are advised to check weather conditions before embarking on the hike and to be prepared for changing weather patterns, which are common in the Highlands. Staying on designated paths and keeping a safe distance from wildlife are crucial for ensuring visitor safety and protecting the park's delicate ecosystem.
