Shikōkai
Shikōkai is a term in sumo wrestling that refers to the act of stomping one's feet powerfully on the ground as part of the pre-bout ritual. This stomping is not merely a ceremonial gesture; it is believed to drive away evil spirits and demons from the dohyō (the sumo ring), purifying the arena and ensuring a fair contest.
The shikō is performed by raising each leg high in the air, bending the knee sharply, and then bringing the foot down with considerable force. The wrestler typically repeats this stomping action several times with each leg.
The shikōkai is a fundamental aspect of sumo culture and reflects the sport's deep roots in Shinto religious traditions. It is considered an integral part of a wrestler's training regime, contributing to lower body strength and balance, as well as serving as a psychological preparation for the match ahead. The act itself requires significant strength, flexibility, and coordination.
