Mehmood (actor)

Mehmood Ali (1932 – 2004), known mononymously as Mehmood, was an Indian actor, director, producer, and comedian best known for his roles in Hindi cinema. He was a prominent figure in Bollywood, often playing comedic roles that became iconic and highly influential.

Mehmood started his career as a child actor in films like Kismet (1943). He struggled for several years before gaining recognition for his comedic timing and distinctive style. His breakthrough role came in Parvarish (1958). He went on to star in numerous successful films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, solidifying his reputation as one of India's leading comedians.

He often played the role of the "underdog" or a character who was slightly foolish but ultimately likeable. Some of his most memorable performances include those in Gumnaam (1965), Padosan (1968), Bombay to Goa (1972), and Kunwara Baap (1974).

Mehmood also directed and produced several films, including Chhote Nawab (1961), which marked the debut of R. D. Burman as a music director, and Kunwara Baap, a film that addressed the issue of polio vaccination.

His influence on Indian comedy is undeniable. Many subsequent comedians have cited him as an inspiration. His energetic performances and unique comedic style continue to be enjoyed by audiences today.
