Hen Island (Tasmania)
Hen Island is a small, uninhabited island located off the south coast of Tasmania, Australia. It forms part of the Recherche Archipelago, a group of islands known for their rugged coastline and diverse wildlife. The island is situated near South East Cape, the southernmost point of mainland Tasmania.
Hen Island is predominantly composed of dolerite rock, contributing to its steep cliffs and rocky terrain. The island's vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of low-lying shrubs and grasses adapted to the harsh, exposed conditions.
Hen Island is a significant breeding site for seabirds, including various species of albatross, shearwaters, and petrels. It is also home to the endemic Pedra Branca skink ( Niveoscincus palfreymani), which is found only on Hen Island and nearby Pedra Branca. The island's isolation has allowed these populations to thrive relatively undisturbed.
Due to its ecological significance and fragile environment, access to Hen Island is restricted to protect its flora and fauna. The island is managed as part of the Southwest National Park, a component of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Its remote location and challenging terrain limit human interference, helping to preserve its natural values. Scientific research and monitoring activities are conducted periodically to assess the health of the island's ecosystems and the populations of its resident species.
