Trials of Mana (2020 video game)
Trials of Mana is a 3D action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. It is a full, ground-up remake of the 1995 Super Nintendo Entertainment System game of the same name, originally released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 3. This remake features fully polygonal 3D graphics, a reworked battle system, voice acting, and a rearranged soundtrack.
The game follows the intertwined stories of six selectable protagonists: Duran, Angela, Kevin, Charlotte, Hawkeye, and Riesz. At the beginning of the game, the player chooses one main character and two party members. Each combination of characters leads to a unique storyline and ending, providing considerable replay value. The story revolves around the Mana Stones, ancient sources of power threatened by evil forces aiming to unleash monsters and conquer the world. The chosen heroes must prevent this from happening by restoring the power of the Mana Sword and defeating the Benevodons.
The gameplay involves real-time combat in open environments. Players control one character at a time, while the AI controls the other party members. Characters can attack, dodge, use special abilities, and cast spells. The game also features a class change system that allows players to customize their characters' abilities and appearances as they progress. Significant improvements were made to the original game's mechanics, offering a modern action RPG experience while remaining faithful to the core narrative and spirit of the original Trials of Mana.
