Mermaids (1990 film)
Mermaids is a 1990 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Richard Benjamin and starring Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder, and Christina Ricci. Set in 1963, it follows the eccentric Flax family as they move to a new town following the most recent of Mamma Flax’s (Cher) many fleeting relationships. The film primarily focuses on Charlotte Flax (Ryder), the eldest daughter, who struggles with her burgeoning sexuality and religious doubts, while her younger sister Kate (Ricci) is an Olympic-hopeful swimmer obsessed with the sport. Lou Landsky (Hoskins) is a friendly shoe store owner who develops a connection with Rachel.
The film is based on the 1986 novel Mermaids by Patty Dann. Initially, Lasse Hallström was slated to direct, but he was replaced with Frank Oz who was then replaced by Benjamin during filming. Mermaids received mixed to positive reviews, with critics generally praising the performances of the lead actresses, particularly Ryder and Ricci. Cher also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film's soundtrack, which includes the song "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" performed by Cher, was also commercially successful.
