Old and New Dreams (1979 album)
Old and New Dreams is a studio album by the jazz quartet of the same name, released in 1979 on the Black Saint label. The group consisted of Don Cherry (cornet), Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone, musette), Charlie Haden (bass), and Ed Blackwell (drums). This self-titled album documents the band's exploration of Ornette Coleman's compositions, along with original works by band members, particularly drawing inspiration from folk melodies and free jazz traditions. The music is characterized by its melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality, and the empathetic interplay between the four musicians, all of whom were closely associated with Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking work in the 1960s. It represents a continuation and reinterpretation of Coleman's Harmolodic approach, infused with a distinct sense of history and shared musical understanding.
