George Richardson (ice hockey)

George Richardson (1886 – February 12, 1916) was a Canadian amateur ice hockey player and soldier. He was a prominent figure in the early history of the sport in Canada.

Richardson played as a forward for Queen's University and the Queen's Hockey Club in Kingston, Ontario. He was known for his skill, speed, and sportsmanship. He led Queen's to multiple championships, including the Queen's Cup and the Allan Cup, the Canadian amateur championship.

Beyond his playing career, Richardson was a key figure in the administration and promotion of amateur hockey. He served in various roles, including executive positions within hockey organizations.

With the outbreak of World War I, Richardson enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served with distinction in the conflict. Tragically, he was killed in action in France on February 12, 1916, during the Battle of the St. Eloi Craters.

George Richardson's contributions to ice hockey were recognized posthumously. The George Richardson Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the Eastern Canadian junior "A" hockey champion, was named in his honor. The trophy served as a symbol of his dedication to the sport and his sacrifice for his country. It was retired in 2014 with the restructuring of junior hockey leagues.
