Simoeis

The Simoeis (Ancient Greek: Σιμόεις) is a river mentioned in Homer's Iliad, located near the city of Troy. It is described as flowing from Mount Ida and joining the Scamander (also known as the Xanthus) on the plain before the city. In the epic poem, the Simoeis, along with the Scamander, is portrayed as a god and plays a significant role in the battles around Troy. The river god Simoeis is said to have been angered by Achilles when he polluted the river with the bodies of slain Trojans. The river is characterized as swift-flowing and capable of great destruction when roused. The precise identification of the Simoeis with a modern river is debated, but some scholars believe it may correspond to the modern Dümruk Su, a small river near the location of ancient Troy. The Simoeis, along with the Scamander, is an integral part of the geographical and mythical landscape of the Iliad.
