Siege of Sevastopol (panorama)

The "Siege of Sevastopol (panorama)" refers to the panoramic painting created by Franz Roubaud depicting the defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War (1854-1855). This panorama, officially titled "The Defence of Sevastopol on 18 June 1855," is a cyclindrical, immersive painting that places the viewer in the center of the action, recreating the intense fighting on Malakhov Kurgan, a key strategic point in the siege.

The panorama aims to realistically depict the intensity of the battle and the heroism of the Russian soldiers and sailors defending the city against the Allied forces (British, French, Ottoman, and Sardinian). It portrays the chaos, destruction, and bravery of the combatants, aiming to evoke a strong emotional response in the viewer.

The original panorama was completed in 1904. It suffered significant damage during World War II and was painstakingly restored in the 1950s. The restored panorama is housed in a dedicated museum building in Sevastopol, Crimea.

Visitors stand on a central platform within the circular building and are surrounded by the massive canvas, which is further enhanced by a three-dimensional foreground filled with authentic artifacts and debris, creating a hyperrealistic effect. The combination of the painted canvas and the physical foreground elements creates a powerful and memorable experience for viewers, immersing them in the historical event. The panorama serves as a significant cultural and historical monument, commemorating the sacrifices made during the siege and highlighting the historical narrative of the city of Sevastopol.
