Hnilec (river)

The Hnilec is a river in eastern Slovakia. It is a right tributary of the Hornád River. The river originates in the Slovak Ore Mountains (Slovenské rudohorie), specifically the Volovské vrchy mountain range. It flows generally in a northern direction through a relatively sparsely populated, heavily forested region.

The river plays a role in water management, with at least one significant reservoir and hydroelectric plant located along its course. The Palcmanská Maša reservoir, for example, is located on the Hnilec and is important for both flood control and power generation. The surrounding area is popular for recreation, including hiking and water sports.

The Hnilec River's watershed contributes to the larger Hornád River basin, which eventually flows into the Tisza River, part of the Danube River basin. The river's name is Slovak in origin.
