Lake Krasnoye (Chukotka)
Lake Krasnoye, also known as Krasnoye Lake, is a large freshwater lake located in the Anadyr Lowland in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, in the Russian Far East. It is situated south of the Anadyr River and is connected to it via a short, narrow channel.
The lake is notable for its significant populations of fish, making it an important resource for local communities. Salmon, including chum salmon and pink salmon, are particularly abundant during their spawning runs. Other fish species also inhabit the lake.
The surrounding landscape is characterized by tundra vegetation. The climate in the region is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The lake freezes over for much of the year.
Geologically, the lake lies within a depression of tectonic origin. It receives water from precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater. The water level fluctuates seasonally, with the highest levels typically occurring during the spring thaw.
Human activity in the area is limited to small, scattered settlements of indigenous peoples, primarily Chukchi, who traditionally rely on fishing and hunting for their subsistence.
