3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles

The 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles was a regiment of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, which served during World War I. Formed in 1911 as part of the Territorial Force, it drew its recruits primarily from the Auckland Military District.

During the war, the regiment served extensively in the Middle Eastern theatre, including the Gallipoli Campaign. Disembarked at Gallipoli in May 1915 without their horses, they fought as infantry until being withdrawn in December 1915.

Following Gallipoli, the regiment reformed in Egypt and participated in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. They saw action at key battles including Romani, Magdhaba, Rafa, Gaza, Beersheba, and the advance on Jerusalem. Their role typically involved reconnaissance, flank protection, and pursuit of retreating enemy forces.

The 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles were known for their horsemanship, endurance, and fighting spirit. After the war, the regiment was disbanded as part of post-war military restructuring. Its history is maintained through regimental associations and in the records of the New Zealand Defence Force. The regiment's contributions are remembered as a key component of New Zealand's war effort in the Middle East.
