Henry Wilde (engineer)

Henry Tingle Wilde (21 September 1872 – 15 April 1912) was the Chief Officer of the RMS Titanic.

Wilde had a long and distinguished career with the White Star Line prior to his assignment to the Titanic. He began his sea career with Messrs. James Chambers and Co, Liverpool, eventually joining the White Star Line around 1897. He served on several White Star vessels, including the Medic, Cymric, Arabic, Celtic, Cedric, Oceanic, and Olympic. He was known for his dedication, experience, and professionalism.

Originally, Wilde was not slated to be part of the Titanic's maiden voyage crew. He was reassigned from the Olympic, where he was also serving as Chief Officer. His arrival on the Titanic resulted in the demotion of Charles Lightoller from First Officer to Second Officer, and David Blair was removed from the crew entirely.

During the sinking of the Titanic, Wilde played an active role in assisting with the evacuation process. He was seen helping to load and lower lifeboats. His specific actions and movements in the final hours are not fully documented, but accounts suggest he was diligently performing his duties to the best of his ability.

Henry Wilde perished in the sinking of the Titanic. His body was never recovered. His loss was keenly felt by his colleagues and the White Star Line. He is remembered as a highly competent and respected officer who gave his life in service during one of the most significant maritime disasters in history.
