Sham (horse)

Sham was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a top contender for the 1973 Triple Crown, ultimately finishing second to Secretariat in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and subsequently withdrawing from the Belmont Stakes due to injury.

Foaled in 1970, Sham was known for his exceptional speed and competitive spirit. He was considered by many to be a legitimate threat to Secretariat's dominance. In the Kentucky Derby, Sham finished 2 1/2 lengths behind Secretariat, recording the second-fastest Derby time in history at that point (a time later surpassed). The Preakness saw a similar outcome, with Sham again finishing second to Secretariat.

Prior to the Belmont Stakes, Sham suffered a minor injury in his stall. While he was initially entered in the race, his condition deteriorated, and he was ultimately scratched. Secretariat went on to win the Belmont in record-breaking fashion.

Following his Triple Crown bid, Sham continued to race, winning the Woodward Stakes later in 1973. However, further injuries plagued his career, leading to his retirement in 1975. He was later sold to stud in Saudi Arabia, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Sham's legacy is one of talent and unfulfilled potential. He is often remembered as a formidable rival to Secretariat, and his performances in the 1973 Triple Crown races solidified his place in racing history, even though he did not achieve Triple Crown glory. His courage and speed are still admired by horse racing enthusiasts.
