Sevmash
Sevmash (Russian: Севмаш, short for Северное машиностроительное предприятие, Severnoe Mashinostroitelnoe Predpriyatie; English: Northern Machine-Building Enterprise) is a Russian shipbuilding company located in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, on the White Sea coast. It is the largest shipbuilding enterprise in Russia and is responsible for the construction of the country's nuclear-powered submarines.
Established in 1939, Sevmash initially produced relatively small surface warships. During the Cold War, it transitioned to specializing in nuclear submarine construction, becoming a key player in the Soviet Union's and later Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent. Over the decades, Sevmash has built a wide range of submarine classes, including the Typhoon, Akula, and Borei classes.
In addition to submarine construction, Sevmash also engages in the repair, modernization, and decommissioning of nuclear submarines. The company also undertakes the construction of offshore platforms, civil ships, and provides other metalworking services. A significant recent project was the modernization of the Indian Navy aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (formerly the Soviet aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov).
Sevmash is a state-owned company and plays a critical role in the Russian defense industry. It continues to be a major employer in Severodvinsk and a strategically important asset for the Russian Federation. The ongoing construction of advanced nuclear submarines ensures its continued relevance in maintaining Russia's naval capabilities.
