Friends and Lovers is a pre-Code American romantic drama film released in 1931. The film was directed by Victor Schertzinger and stars Adolphe Menjou, Lili Damita, and Laurence Olivier in his American film debut.
The story revolves around an aging British officer in India, General Smashing (Menjou), who finds himself caught in a love triangle between a young American woman, Mary (Damita), and a younger officer, Lieutenant Nichols (Olivier). General Smashing is assigned to escort Mary across India, and they develop feelings for each other. However, Mary is also attracted to the younger Nichols, creating romantic complications and moral dilemmas within the context of the British colonial setting.
