Seeker (Nicholson novel)

Seeker is a 2005 fantasy novel by British author William Nicholson, the first book in The Noble Warriors trilogy. The trilogy also includes Jango (2006) and Nomad (2007).

The novel follows the coming-of-age journey of Morning Star, a young girl living in a remote, agrarian community referred to as "The Community." The Community is deeply religious, governed by strict rules and expectations, particularly regarding a ritual called the "Day of Ascension." This day determines the future roles of the young people within the Community.

On the Day of Ascension, Morning Star and her friends, Seeker and Purity, undergo a mysterious test that unexpectedly yields different results than anticipated. Seeker is chosen to be a "Seeker," a role traditionally bestowed upon men, tasked with leaving the Community to search for God. Morning Star is deemed "Morrow," destined to become the next spiritual leader of the Community. Purity is not chosen for any specific role, which is also unexpected.

The story then focuses primarily on Seeker's journey as he ventures out into the world beyond The Community, confronting the realities of its corruption, violence, and social inequality. He grapples with his faith, the truth about the Community's beliefs, and his own identity. Morning Star's internal struggles and eventual decision to also leave the Community add another layer to the narrative.

The book explores themes of faith, doubt, societal control, self-discovery, and the conflict between idealism and reality. It's noted for its exploration of religious dogma and the challenging of established authority.
