Upajjana

Upajjana (Pali: upajjana) refers to arising, origination, or coming into existence. In Buddhist philosophy, particularly within the Abhidhamma tradition, upajjana signifies the moment something newly arises or originates. It is a key aspect of understanding the impermanent nature of phenomena (anicca). Every phenomenon, whether mental or physical, undergoes the process of upajjana (arising), thiti (presence or duration), and bhanga (cessation). Understanding upajjana is essential for comprehending the cycle of dependent origination (paticcasamuppada) and the constantly changing nature of reality. It highlights the dynamic and non-static essence of existence. It is often contrasted with vaya, which refers to passing away.
