Scott Johnson (percussionist)
Scott Johnson (born 1952) is an American composer and percussionist known for his unique blend of minimalist techniques, rock influences, and sampling. His music often explores themes of American culture, technology, and the relationship between humans and machines.
Johnson's early musical experiences included playing drums in rock bands. He later studied composition and percussion at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was influenced by the minimalist music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. He began incorporating sampling and electronic sounds into his compositions in the 1980s, developing a distinctive style that fused these elements with traditional instrumental textures.
His notable works include John Somebody, a piece for string quartet and tape that incorporates samples of evangelical preachers; Rock/Paper/Scissors, a percussion quartet that draws inspiration from rock music; and How It Happens, a multimedia work that explores the impact of technology on human perception. He has also composed music for dance and theater.
Johnson has received numerous awards and grants, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the American Composers Orchestra.
