Samuel Rose (bishop)

Samuel Rose (born August 22, 1966, died September 24, 2010) was an American Orthodox Christian bishop. He served as Bishop of Mayfield and auxiliary bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).

Rose was born in San Diego, California, as John (Ivan) Rose. He converted to Orthodox Christianity in his youth. He became a monk at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, in 1988 and was tonsured with the name Samuel. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1990 and to the priesthood in 1992.

Father Samuel served in various roles at Holy Trinity Monastery, including as a teacher at Holy Trinity Seminary. He was known for his devoutness, his knowledge of the Orthodox faith, and his pastoral care.

In 2005, he was consecrated Bishop of Mayfield, a titular see. As a bishop, he assisted the Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York in the administration of the Eastern American Diocese of ROCOR. Bishop Samuel traveled extensively, visiting parishes and monasteries throughout ROCOR and preaching and teaching the Orthodox faith.

He reposed in the Lord on September 24, 2010, following complications from diabetes. He is remembered for his dedication to the Orthodox Church, his spiritual guidance, and his love for the monastic life.
