Oceania (Oceania album)
Oceania is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on June 19, 2012, by EMI Records. It is a concept album and the first to feature a completely new lineup alongside Billy Corgan: guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Nicole Fiorentino, and drummer Mike Byrne.
The album was intended to be part of a larger project, "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope," a free online album consisting of 44 songs. However, the band eventually decided to release the songs as more traditional albums. Oceania was the first of these albums.
Thematically, Oceania explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, reflecting a more personal and introspective approach compared to some of The Smashing Pumpkins' earlier work. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the band's rejuvenated sound and songwriting quality, particularly Corgan's vocal performance and the album's cohesiveness. Some critics, however, found the album's length excessive. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. Singles released from the album include "Owata," "The Celestials," and "Panopticon."
