Samuel Jones (footballer, born 1866)

Samuel Jones was an English footballer who played as a full-back. Born in Oswestry in 1866, he began his footballing career with Oswestry White Stars before joining the more prominent Oswestry United.

Jones joined Newton Heath (later Manchester United) in 1889, during the club's pre-Football League days. He quickly established himself as a regular in the team, known for his strong tackling and defensive capabilities. He was a key part of the Newton Heath side that was a founding member of the Football Alliance in 1889.

Jones continued to play for Newton Heath as they entered the Football League in 1892, being a consistent presence in the squad. He made over 100 appearances for the club in all competitions. He was known for his reliability and commitment to the team.

He left Newton Heath in 1896 and returned to his native Oswestry, where he likely continued to play football at a local level, although details of his later career are scarce. His contribution to Newton Heath during a formative period of their history marks him as a significant figure in the club's early years.
