Kilmadock
Kilmadock is a civil parish and former ecclesiastical parish in the Stirling council area of Scotland. It is located in the Highland part of the council area, north-west of Stirling itself.
The name "Kilmadock" derives from the Gaelic Cill MoDog, meaning "the church of St. Madoc". St. Madoc was a Scottish saint, likely a contemporary of St. Columba, to whom several churches in Scotland are dedicated.
Historically, Kilmadock was a significant parish within the district of Menteith. It encompassed a considerable area, stretching from the edge of the Scottish Highlands down into more fertile lowland areas. This geographical diversity influenced its economy, which was traditionally based on agriculture, sheep farming, and forestry.
Key settlements within the parish include Doune and Deanston. Doune, with its imposing Doune Castle, is historically important and is known for its associations with figures like Mary Queen of Scots. Deanston is notable for its Deanston Distillery, a major employer in the area that produces single malt Scotch whisky.
The remnants of the old church of Kilmadock, dedicated to St. Madoc, can still be found in the parish. These ruins, along with other historical sites and monuments, contribute to the rich cultural heritage of the area. The parish records of Kilmadock provide valuable insights into the social and economic history of the region.
Today, Kilmadock remains a vibrant community with a strong sense of its historical identity. It benefits from its proximity to both the scenic beauty of the Highlands and the economic opportunities of the Central Belt of Scotland.
