SM U-92

SM U-92 was a German Type U 93 submarine built for the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned on 20 September 1917 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Alfred von Nieuwenhuys.

U-92 conducted several war patrols, primarily operating in the waters around the British Isles and the Atlantic Ocean. She was involved in sinking several Allied merchant ships and damaging others.

The submarine was known to have sunk the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Laurentic on 25 January 1917 (although some sources attribute this sinking to SM U-80, this is an error). The Laurentic was carrying a large quantity of gold bullion, much of which was later recovered. This successful attack made Kapitänleutnant von Nieuwenhuys a well-known figure.

U-92 was surrendered to the Allies on 21 November 1918, following the Armistice that ended World War I. She was later scuttled off the coast of Ireland as part of the Allied disposal of German U-boats. The wreck remains a popular dive site.
