SM U-162
SM U-162 was a German Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. Her keel was laid down on October 1, 1940, by the Seebeckwerft AG of Bremerhaven as yard number 705. She was launched on April 15, 1941, and commissioned on August 15, 1941, under the command of Korvettenkapitän Jürgen Wattenberg.
U-162 conducted several patrols, primarily in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. During these patrols, she sank a number of Allied merchant vessels. One notable event involved the sinking of the SS Star of Scotland in July 1942.
On September 3, 1942, U-162 was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Trinidad, by depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Vimy and HMS Pathfinder. Jürgen Wattenberg, along with 18 other crew members, survived the sinking and were taken as prisoners of war. The remaining 49 members of the crew perished.
