Sōjōbō

Sōjōbō (僧正坊) is a legendary tengu, a type of supernatural creature in Japanese folklore, said to dwell on Mount Kurama, north of Kyoto. He is considered the king of the tengu, particularly the daitengu (greater tengu), and is often depicted with a long nose, white hair, and immense power.

Sōjōbō is renowned for his mastery of martial arts and magic. He is credited with teaching the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune (later known as Ushiwakamaru) swordsmanship, strategy, and other skills during Yoshitsune's formative years spent hidden at Kurama Temple. This mentorship played a crucial role in Yoshitsune's later military successes.

Beyond his association with Yoshitsune, Sōjōbō is a figure of both reverence and fear. He is seen as a protector of the mountains and a powerful guardian, but also as a potentially dangerous being who can punish those who disrespect the natural world or stray into his domain without proper reverence.

Sōjōbō's image has evolved over time, influenced by Buddhist and Shinto beliefs. He is sometimes associated with mountain ascetics (yamabushi) and is seen as a symbol of spiritual power and discipline. He remains a popular figure in Japanese art, literature, and popular culture, often representing the wild, untamed forces of nature and the potential for enlightenment through hardship and training.
