Rolf Ruff

Rolf Ruff (born 1945, Westfalen, Germany) is a German-born American scientist known for his contributions to the field of cellular neurobiology, particularly the study of voltage-gated ion channels and their role in neuronal function and disease.

Ruff received his M.D. from the University of Münster and pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Washington in Seattle. He subsequently joined the faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he held a professorship for many years.

His research has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the function and regulation of ion channels, particularly sodium channels. He has investigated how mutations in these channels can lead to neurological disorders such as epilepsy, pain syndromes, and muscle disorders like myotonia. His work has also examined the role of ion channels in nerve injury and regeneration.

Ruff has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications in leading journals and has been recognized for his contributions to neuroscience with awards and honors. He is considered a leading expert in the biophysics and molecular biology of ion channels and their relevance to human health. His research has contributed significantly to the development of new therapeutic strategies for neurological diseases related to ion channel dysfunction.
