Robert Smyth (American politician)

Robert Smyth (born c. 1844, died 1900) was an American politician who served as a United States Representative from Texas.

Smyth was born in County Down, Ireland, around 1844. He immigrated to the United States in 1852 and settled in Texas. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1869, commencing practice in Springfield, Texas. He later moved to Franklin, Texas.

Smyth served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1873 to 1875. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879 – March 3, 1881). He was unsuccessful in his bid for re-election in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress.

After his term in Congress, Smyth resumed the practice of law in Franklin, Texas. He served as the county judge of Robertson County from 1894 to 1898. He died in Franklin, Texas, in 1900 and was interred in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
