Robert Gordon (minister)

Robert Gordon (1665-1731) was a Scottish minister and philanthropist. He is best known for founding Robert Gordon's Hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland, which later evolved into Robert Gordon's College and Robert Gordon University.

Born in Aberdeen, Gordon initially pursued a career in commerce, becoming a successful merchant and trading in the Baltic region. He accumulated a considerable fortune but remained unmarried and childless. Upon his death in 1731, he bequeathed the bulk of his estate to establish a hospital for the education and maintenance of poor boys in Aberdeen.

His will specified the creation of "Robert Gordon's Hospital," intended to provide practical education and vocational training to disadvantaged children, preparing them for apprenticeships and future employment. The institution was established in 1750 and initially housed and educated a relatively small number of boys.

Over time, Robert Gordon's Hospital expanded its scope and curriculum, eventually transitioning into a fee-paying day school in the 19th century. It became Robert Gordon's College, a highly regarded independent school. The foundation also contributed to the establishment of Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology, which subsequently gained university status as Robert Gordon University.

Robert Gordon's legacy continues through the institutions that bear his name, which have played a significant role in education and opportunity in Aberdeen and beyond. He is remembered as a benevolent benefactor whose foresight and generosity helped shape the educational landscape of the region.
