Ray Seary (born November 2, 1955) is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He is best known for his tenure as the pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2010 to 2019.
Seary played professional baseball as a pitcher from 1977 to 1988, reaching the major leagues with the San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers. After his playing career, he transitioned into coaching.
His coaching career included stints in the minor leagues, with the Florida Marlins organization, and with the Pirates' minor league affiliates. He was promoted to the Pirates' major league coaching staff in 2010, initially as a bullpen coach before becoming the pitching coach later that season.
Seary is widely credited with helping to revitalize the careers of numerous pitchers during his time with the Pirates, including A.J. Burnett, Francisco Liriano, and Mark Melancon. He was known for his positive approach, individualized instruction, and emphasis on mental aspects of pitching, often referred to as "Searage." His work contributed significantly to the Pirates' success during the early to mid-2010s, including their first playoff appearance in over two decades in 2013. He was released by the Pirates following the 2019 season.
