Minister of Finance (Malaysia)
The Minister of Finance of Malaysia (Malay: Menteri Kewangan Malaysia) is the cabinet minister responsible for the federal government's finances. The position is one of the most senior in the Malaysian Cabinet. The Minister oversees the Ministry of Finance (Malay: Kementerian Kewangan) and its departments and agencies, and is responsible for presenting the annual federal budget to the Parliament of Malaysia.
The Minister's responsibilities include:
- Managing the national economy, including fiscal policy, monetary policy (in conjunction with Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank), and taxation.
- Preparing and presenting the annual federal budget.
- Overseeing government investment and debt management.
- Representing Malaysia in international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
- Supervising government-linked companies (GLCs) and ensuring their financial stability.
The appointment of the Minister of Finance is made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Minister must be a Member of Parliament (MP).
