Au Tabor

Au Tabor refers to a hill in Lower Galilee, Israel, traditionally identified as the Mount Tabor of the Bible. This identification is a point of contention among some scholars, particularly those who argue it is not the location mentioned in the Book of Judges.

Mount Tabor, according to tradition, is the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus, an event recounted in the New Testament Gospels. This event is a cornerstone of Christian faith, marking a moment when Jesus revealed his divine glory to three of his apostles: Peter, James, and John. During the Transfiguration, it is said that Moses and Elijah appeared beside Jesus, and God spoke from a cloud, affirming Jesus as his son.

The site has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, with evidence of Christian presence dating back to the 4th century. Today, two prominent churches stand atop Mount Tabor: the Roman Catholic Basilica of the Transfiguration and an Eastern Orthodox church dedicated to the Prophet Elijah. Historically, Mount Tabor held strategic importance due to its elevated position overlooking the Jezreel Valley. This strategic advantage made it a site of battles and fortifications throughout various periods, including the time of the Maccabees and the Crusades. The remnants of these fortifications can still be observed.
