Rachel Harrison (artist)
Rachel Harrison (born 1966) is an American sculptor and visual artist known for her eclectic and often humorous works that blend sculpture, photography, and painting. Her pieces frequently incorporate found objects, abstract forms, and seemingly arbitrary juxtapositions, challenging traditional notions of taste and artistic coherence.
Harrison's sculptures are characterized by their rough, hand-made quality, often employing materials like styrofoam, concrete, wood, and everyday objects. She frequently incorporates photographs, either sourced or taken by herself, into her sculptural compositions, blurring the lines between two and three dimensions. Her work is often interpreted as a commentary on contemporary culture, consumerism, and the art world itself.
Harrison's work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries internationally. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial. Harrison's art is represented in the collections of many prominent museums.
