Precipitation (horse)
Precipitation was a British Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1936 Epsom Derby. He was a bay colt foaled in 1933, sired by Hurry On out of the mare Double Life. Owned and bred by Reginald Macdonald-Buchanan, Precipitation was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort.
Although Precipitation showed promise as a two-year-old, he didn't achieve significant victories. It was as a three-year-old that he truly excelled. His victory in the Derby was considered a surprise, as he was not among the leading contenders. He followed up his Derby win with a victory in the Gold Cup at Ascot.
Precipitation went on to become a highly influential sire. He stood at stud and produced numerous successful racehorses and broodmares, contributing significantly to the bloodlines of modern Thoroughbreds. Notable offspring included Airborne (Derby winner), Chamossaire (St. Leger winner), and Premonition. His progeny were known for their stamina and soundness. Precipitation's influence extends through subsequent generations, making him an important figure in Thoroughbred breeding history. He died in 1955.
