French ship Superbe (1784)

The Superbe was a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Royal Navy, launched in 1784. She was designed by Joseph-Marie-Rose Pellerin and built at Brest.

Superbe participated in a number of naval engagements during the French Revolutionary Wars. Notably, she was present at the Glorious First of June in 1794, a major naval battle against the British fleet.

The Superbe was eventually captured by the British Royal Navy in 1795. After her capture, she was taken into British service and renamed HMS Mars. As HMS Mars, she continued to serve in the Royal Navy until she was wrecked in 1806.

Her career, both as a French and British vessel, saw her involved in significant events of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in the context of the naval conflicts between France and Great Britain.
