Podura

Podura is a historical genus of springtails (Collembola). It is considered one of the earliest described genera within this order. Originally, Podura aquatica was the type species and frequently the only species assigned to the genus.

Historically, Podura was a catch-all genus, with many diverse springtail species initially placed within it due to superficial similarities. As the science of Collembola taxonomy progressed and more distinguishing characteristics were identified, these species were progressively reclassified into more appropriate and well-defined genera within the Collembola order.

Today, the genus Podura is significantly restricted. Many species formerly classified as Podura have been moved to other genera, reflecting a more refined understanding of Collembola phylogeny. The genus now encompasses a much smaller, more closely related group of springtails.

The defining characteristics of species still retained within the Podura genus typically include a distinctive body shape, furcula (the spring-like appendage used for jumping), and other morphological features used in modern Collembola taxonomy. Podura aquatica, the water springtail, remains a key representative of the genus, typically found in aquatic or semi-aquatic environments.
