Plicatula

Plicatula is a genus of saltwater clams, marine bivalve molluscs in the family Plicatulidae, commonly known as plicate oysters. These bivalves are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas.

Plicatula species are characterized by their irregular, often plicate (folded or pleated) shells, which can be strongly attached to the substrate. The shell's shape is heavily influenced by the surface to which it adheres, leading to considerable variation within species. The hinge is relatively small and lacks teeth.

The shells of Plicatula are typically solid and often brightly colored, exhibiting hues such as red, orange, yellow, and white. The exterior surface can be rough and ornamented with ribs, spines, or scales.

These bivalves are filter feeders, extracting food particles from the surrounding water. They typically inhabit rocky reefs, coral rubble, or other hard surfaces, often in shallow to moderately deep waters.

While not commercially significant in terms of large-scale fisheries, Plicatula species contribute to the biodiversity of marine ecosystems and are sometimes collected by shell enthusiasts.
