Philippe Gautier (judge)

Philippe Gautier is a French judge currently serving on the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He was elected to the ICJ by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council in November 2023 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Judge Xue Hanqin. His term began in February 2024 and will last until February 2033.

Prior to his election to the ICJ, Judge Gautier served as the Director of the Legal Affairs Division of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. In this role, he advised the French government on matters of international law and represented France in international negotiations and legal proceedings. He also served as Legal Counsel of the French Embassy in Washington D.C. for a period.

He holds a doctorate in law from Panthéon-Assas University (Paris II). He has lectured in international law at several universities and institutions. He is considered an expert in public international law, with specific expertise in areas such as treaty law, international dispute settlement, and the law of the sea. He has published extensively on these subjects.
