Ajjavara

Ajjavara (pronounced Ah-jjah-vah-rah) is a term primarily used in Tulu Nadu, a region in the southwestern part of Karnataka, India. It refers to the eldest female member of a Bunt (also known as Nadava) family or community, particularly within a matrilineal system known as Aliyasantana.

The Ajjavara holds a position of respect and authority within the family unit. In the traditional Aliyasantana system, property and lineage are traced through the female line. As the senior female, the Ajjavara often played a crucial role in decision-making processes related to family matters, including land management, inheritance, and social customs.

While the Aliyasantana system is becoming less prevalent, the term Ajjavara remains in use and signifies respect for elder women within the Bunt community. The Ajjavara's wisdom and experience are traditionally valued, and her opinions are sought after in important family affairs. The role reflects the historical importance of women in maintaining continuity and stability within the matrilineal social structure of the region.

Beyond its specific connection to the Bunt community and Aliyasantana, "Ajjavara" can also be used more broadly in the Tulu language to refer to a very elderly woman, typically a grandmother figure. However, its primary and most culturally significant meaning is linked to its role within the Bunt matrilineal system.
