Petite Symphonie (Gounod)

The Petite Symphonie (Little Symphony), Op. 216, is a nonet in B-flat major for flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons by Charles Gounod. Composed in 1885, it was commissioned by the flutist Paul Taffanel for his wind ensemble, the Société de Musique de Chambre pour Instruments à Vent. The work consists of four movements:

  • I. Adagio et Allegretto
  • II. Andante cantabile
  • III. Scherzo: Allegro moderato
  • IV. Finale: Allegretto

The Petite Symphonie is considered a significant work in the wind chamber music repertoire of the Romantic era. It is known for its elegant melodies, clear orchestration, and overall lightness of character, distinguishing it from the grander symphonic works more typically associated with Gounod. While "petite" in name and scoring, the work possesses considerable musical substance and is often praised for its refined craftsmanship and harmonic sophistication. It demonstrates Gounod's understanding of wind instruments and his ability to write effectively for their unique timbral qualities. The piece is a staple in the repertoire of many wind ensembles.
