Panchak

Panchak, in Hindu astrology, refers to a period of five days considered inauspicious for undertaking certain activities. It is determined by the position of the Moon (Chandra) in relation to certain constellations (Nakshatras). When the Moon transits through the last two phases of Dhanishta, the entire Shatabhisha, the entire Purva Bhadrapada, the entire Uttara Bhadrapada, and the entire Revati Nakshatras, this period is termed Panchak. These five Nakshatras represent the last segment of the zodiac.

The inauspiciousness of Panchak is based on traditional beliefs and scriptural interpretations. Specific activities that are generally avoided during Panchak include:

  • Construction activities: Laying the foundation or roofing of a house.
  • Travel towards the South: Considered the direction of Yama, the god of death, in certain contexts.
  • Acquiring or dealing with cots/beds: Some texts associate this with potential misfortune.
  • Collection of fuel: Collecting or storing wood, especially for cremation purposes, is sometimes discouraged.
  • Disposing of a deceased body: If a death occurs during Panchak, specific rituals are often performed to mitigate potential negative effects on the family.

Different regions and communities may have variations in the severity and specific activities restricted during Panchak. Astrological texts provide details and remedial measures to alleviate the perceived negative influences. The dates of Panchak vary each month, following the lunar calendar. It's important to note that the interpretation and adherence to Panchak beliefs vary widely, with some individuals and communities considering it highly significant while others pay little or no attention to it.
