Nuki (joinery)

Nuki refers to a horizontal structural member in traditional Japanese timber framing. Specifically, it is a type of tie beam that runs horizontally between columns, typically parallel to the ground, and is mortised and tenoned into the columns to provide lateral stability and prevent racking of the structure.

The nuki is a critical component in the earthquake-resistant design of traditional Japanese buildings. By connecting the columns, it creates a more rigid frame that can better withstand lateral forces. Its placement and dimensions are carefully calculated based on the overall structural design and the anticipated loads on the building.

Unlike some other horizontal members like kama-nuki which might be decorative, nuki are primarily structural, though their exposed presence can contribute to the aesthetic character of a building. Different types of nuki exist, and their names may vary depending on regional construction practices and specific function. These variations may be further classified by their position in a building’s overall structure, their size, and their precise method of joinery.
